Our Favorite Educational Apps

Our favourite Apps for Homeschooling iOS and Android

Today I’m a little excited to share some of our favorite apps when it comes to education. I know a lot of us look at apps as just play time, but really there are so many awesome educational apps out there. Here are a few that we have used daily for almost two years. The kids never get tired of them, and the great thing is…some are even FREE!!

Free App
iOS Version / Andriod

1418298_10208836195001345_863762445_nThis app is used numerous times a day at our house. We live in the country and are surrounded by woods and water, so you can probably guess that we have all types of birds around. Some we know off-hand, but it’s still fun to look them up.  In order to find out the bird you simply follow a few short steps.

1. Where did you see the bird?
2. When did you see the bird?
3. What size was the bird? There are 7 different size options to pick from
4. What were the main colors? You can pick up to 3 main colors.
5. Was the bird? At the feeder, swimming, on the ground, etc.

That’s it! Once you enter all this, which takes just a few seconds, it then opens up a variety of birds for you to pick from.

We have combined this app with a journaling notebook. As we find new birds, we snap a picture and then look them up on the Merlin Bird ID.  This app shows us the following about the birds:

• ID Information along with beautiful pictures
• Sounds
• map

Once we have gathered all the information we can using the Merlin Bird ID, we make notes in our journal along with a picture of the bird and where we last seen it. It’s a fun way to look back on the different birds we have came across.  One thing that’s neat about the some of the birds that we can’t I.D. 100% is that when we play the sound, sometimes they will sing back.  Doing that we were able to figure out exactly what one of the many ducks that visit our pond was.  That’s also a great way to get a little woodpecker to zoom down and look at you ( completely on accident).

Here is a very small collage of a few that we’ve had in our yard.birds

Endless Numbers

Free App w/ additional purchase options
iOS / Android

This app is designed as a follow-up to Endless Alphabet.  My five-year old has used this app for the past couple of years and loves it! It’s perfect for learning number recognition, sequences, quantity, numerical patterns and simple addition. Each number features interactive sequences and equation puzzles with numbers that come alive and short animation film that is sure to provide laughs. endlessnumbers3

As I mentioned earlier, this is a free app with the option to purchase additional packs.  We tried the free part for a while and once I realized that my little dude loved this app, then I sprang for additional packs.  With the free version 5 numbers are free to try.

To give you an idea of the pricing:

  1. Starter Pack (1 through 25)$6.99

  2. Pack of All Numbers (1 through 100)$14.99

  3. Pack of Remaining Numbers (26 through 100)$11.99

Do I think it’s worth the price? For us it is.  My five-year old is huge on numbers and this game is perfect.  They learn while having fun.

Bible For Kids App

FREE
iOS / Android

Hands down, this is one of our favorite Bible Apps out there.  My five-year old uses this app daily and he loves it!  bibleappHe loves going through the interactive stories and playing with the characters and while doing all these fun activities, he gets the stories of scripture. This app has both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Along with our Bible studies and this app, it warms my heart when my little dude can’t stop talking about his love for Jesus.

Bible app for kids offers easy and kid-friendly navigation. We have used this app for over a year and it never gets old.  The touch-activated animation brings the story to life, and the fun facts and activities keep them learning.

There  you have it.  Three of our absolute favorite apps. These are apps that we have used almost daily for 2+ years and still enjoy them.  We are going to continue to highlight some of our favorite apps over the next few months, but for now check out what educational apps other moms are using HERE.

  1. That bird app looks cool. My kids have used the Bible app, but it doesn’t have the Catholic Bible and we are Catholic.

    1. That would be awesome if they would add the Catholic Bible. It’s such a fantastic app.

Yes the bird app is super cool. Funny story with it though. As I mentioned in the post, the birds will sing back. We had a little woodpecker in the tree and I was listening to the different songs to figure out exactly what type it was. I figured it out when the little guy flew down in my face. At least the boys thought it was funny.
