My 2019 Word For The Year

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been reflecting on the past year. The goals that I had accomplished, the ones that I never reached and then there were those that I simply started and then neglected. During that time I came up with my 2019 Word For The YearCULTIVATE.

Word For The Year

If you look up the word cultivate in the dictionary, the definition is:

1. to prepare and work on (land) in order to raise crops;
2. to promote or improve the growth of (a plant, crop, etc.) by labor and attention.
3. to develop or improve by education or training; train; refine

So how am I going to apply this word into my life? First off, let’s break down the definition; “prepare and work on land in order to raise crops.” This can mean more than working the land. One simply can’t throw seeds on the ground and expect to grow an amazing garden, can we? We have to get out there and work hard, remove the weeds (the bad things that might be holding us back), and we have to work it every day. This is my plan heading into the new year. To work daily on the things that I want to grow and improve in my life. Those things that I really didn’t tend to daily in 2018? Those are going to get more love and attention heading forward.

One thing to remember is that when we do plant a garden, it’s more than just planting and giving attention to what we planted. We have to educate ourselves on taking care of the plants. For example, if I went out and purchased a palm tree to plant in my yard, it might look great during the summer months, but in reality a palm tree can’t live in my area. With that being said, while we can work the “land” daily, we still need to improve our knowledge by education or training. We have to improve in that area in order to promote growth. This leads me to the second part of the definition.

I want to slow down just a little and cultivate what I’ve already been blessed with. To strengthen the foundations with family, my relationship with God, and other aspects of my life. I want to cultivate gratitude, happiness and kindness. I want to set an example for my children that are always watching.
