Baking Fun With BabyCakes – Sour Cream Donuts

My four year old son loves to help me in the kitchen. He loves to help cook and bake and is always so proud of the results! I love the special bonding time that it gives us just as much as he loves to eat the yummy treats!

Recently thanks to Mom Central and BabyCakes we had the opportunity to try out the BabyCakes Donut Maker. Just from reading the description it sounded like a fantastic product and I was very excited for it to arrive so that Davis and I could give it a try.  I have to say that the only thing I was worried about was having to clean up a huge mess afterwards or that there would be a  lot of prep involved before the first use of the BabyCakes Donut Maker but I was sooo wrong!

The BabyCakes Donut Maker was ready to go out of the box which was nice.  Especially since I knew we would be doing all this with little Luke around and let’s just say that if it isn’t fast then he starts to complain!  Davis was ready to jump in and start baking before I ever got the direction read over.  We decided to just make the Sour Cream Donuts since I had yet to make it to the store and I had all the ingredients on hand.

Sour Cream Donuts

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup of milk
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
1/4 cup of sour cream
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl

In separate bowl whisk together remaining ingredients, except glaze or topping.  Pour liquid ingredients into dry ingredients.  Using a mixer on medium speed, blend until smooth.

Fill each cooking reservoir with about 2 tablespoons of batter

Bake about 4 to 5 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into donut comes out clean

Glaze or coat with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar as desired.

Makes about 2 dozen.

I opted to use my food processor when it came to mixing the ingredients simply because I feel it’s safer than him using a mixer.  I let him pour everything in (even though some does end up missing the bowl) and do all the work.  I am just there to measure it out for him.

King Davis the Chef

We found it easier to put our batter into a plastic bag and cut the end and then squeeze that into the donut maker.  I let him help me put it in there but made sure he was very careful since it does get hot.  He helped start the timer and was excited to hear it go off.  Once the smell started filling the kitchen, his reply was “wow, I am a good donut maker”.  Once the timer went off, the lid was opened super quick thanks to Davis.

We immediately took the donuts out and placed them in a container with powdered sugar and that’s when his fun really started!  He was shaking the container like crazy and singing while he did it.  He wanted to make sure to get all his donuts coated!

Finally it was time to enjoy our first taste……

Yes, the king hat stayed on the entire time

So did they meet my little food critics approval? You better believe they did!  He loved them as well as everyone in our family.  Of course when I went for a second one he was quick to remind me that I am not suppose to eat sugar.  I took that as he really didn’t want me eating them all!  He loved these so much that he took them to summer camp and shared with his friends!  He even enjoyed a few pool side.

If you are looking for a great way to make little treats for your family or a way to include your little one then BabyCakes is an awesome way!  I have a feeling that we will be checking out the other BabyCakes products very soon!

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Babycakes and received a product sample and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate
