My boys to hear bedtime stories before they go to sleep at night.  How awesome is it to drift off to sleep dreaming about the wonderful adventures that you just read?  We are always on the lookout for a great bedtime story and recently we were asked to check out Bedtime Math.  I know some of you may be thinking that math and bedtime don’t really go together and I thought that as well until we started with the book.

Bedtime Math

Bedtime Math is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to make nightly math problems as common as the bedtime story.  It was founded by mother of three Laura Overdeck, a trained astrophysicist who launched the program to encourage her own children’s interest in math.

This isn’t an official “curriculum” but it’s an awesome addition to what your child is already learning.  My son will be going into the first grade and this is such a prime time to learn things. He amazes me every day with how much he is learning.  Math to me has always been that “dreaded subject” which I am sure a lot of you can relate, but I don’t want it to be like that for my kids.  With Bedtime Math, we are actually having fun and listening to a story all while we learn and he is solving problems in his head.

 Perfect for all ages

The one thing I love about this book is that it can be ready to multiple ages at one time.  Once you read the short story you have three different levels as far as the math questions go. They are: Wee Ones, Little Kids, and Big Kids.  With my two and six-year-old, we always read the Wee ones, but from time to time I will toss in a Little Kids ones for my six-year-old to see if he gets it or is ready to move up.

In honor of the book launch, bookstores, museums and libraries nationwide will host Bedtime Math National Pajama Party Week events from June 24-29, giving families a chance to take part in the national movement to make math fun, relevant, and a enjoyable part of everyday life.  These free, family-friendly events are aimed at children ages 3-8 years old and their parents. These will include a variety of math-inspired games and activities.  Children are encouraged to come dressed in their pajamas and be ready to play.  You can check out the schedule of events in your area here.
