Bringing Science Into The Kitchen

How We Bring Science Into The KitchenAs most of you know, we have been using Bright Ideas Press Christian Kids Explore Earth And Space. This is an amazing program that’s designed so that I can teach both boys from the same curriculum, which I love! It also is filled with additional learning and one of those is the ability to take Science into the kitchen. My youngest loves to cook, so why not bring science into the kitchen! Combing his love of science and cooking has been a wonderful success.

Bringing Science Into The Kitchen With Bright Ideas Press Christian Kids Explore Earth & Space

Having fun making rock snacks to help visualize the layers of sediment that combine to make rock.

Our very first activity that brought science into the kitchen was one that’s found in our Christian Kids Explore Earth and Space. In this activity, the boys were to make Chocolate Nut Layer Bars that went along with our Unit 2 in the book. This was such an awesome hit, we couldn’t wait to do our next experiment in the kitchen which was also included in their science book, Rock Snacks. These rock snacks were tasty and easy and were another great addition to the Unit 2, Lesson 7 on rocky ground.

Here’s a video the boys made of them creating the activity.

After these two experiments my youngest was hungry for more (no pun intended). He was not only learning science in the kitchen, but also practicing his kitchen skills. We all know that being a homeschool mom, it’s pretty exciting when you figure out the best way your child learns. With that being said, I begin my search on finding other books that would help me to bring science into the kitchen. Here are a list of books that have helped us bring more hands-on kitchen experiments to go along with our Christian Kids Explore Earth & Space:

Kitchen Science Lab for Kids: 52 Family Friendly Experiments from Around the House (Lab Series): Kitchen Science Lab For KidsWe have had this book for sometime and I have no idea why I never thought to pull it out before now. This book bring 52 family friendly experiments to your kitchen. I love that it’s simply and inexpensive and well the boys love it! You can use these experiments for parties, projects or even as part of a coop. Also, like the Christian Kids Explore series, these experiments are great for all ages!

Amazing (Mostly) Edible Science: A Family Guide to Fun Experiments in the Kitchen: Amazing (Mostly) Edible ScienceThis is a fairly new book, but we love it. I’m not gonna lie. Some of the experiments in here are a little on the gross side of food, but that’s ok..if it’s something that I know my boys wouldn’t be interested in then we just skip it. The whole point is to flip through these books to find lessons that go hand-in-hand with our current science curriculum. We have done a couple experiments from this book so far and they have been great! Also, all recipes in the book are safe for consumption which is always a plus!

Throughout this book, your child will learn about classic exploding volcano cakes (we talk about volcanoes in our science), glow-in-the-dark Jello-O, singing cakes and even bouncy eggs. Without a doubt, you’ll have fun with this book. It also has full-color photos and once again is great for all ages!

Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments:Dad's Book of Awesome Science Experiments This book is pretty awesome.  It covers experiments for Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Planet Earth and the Human Body! Keep in mind though that not all these experiments happen in the kitchen, but a great deal of them do. We have found this book to a wonderful addition to our homeschool as part of our Christian Kids Explore Science curriculum.

I hope that you enjoy our list. We have been loving these three books in addition to our Bright Ideas Press Christian Kids Explore Earth & Space.
