Who all is guilty of neglecting the garage doors? As much as I hate to admit it, our garage door doesn’t get the love that it deserves for sure. It’s one of those things that many of us forget to service, even though we use it on a daily basis. We hear it calling out to us for help by creaking and squeaking with every raise and we still continue to ignore it.
A new program from the International Door association has been set up to remind us that our garage door needs the same love and attention as our other doors in and around our home. It’s a program that is very simple to use and takes just a matter of seconds to sign up. You can visit GarageDoorCare.com to sign up for the program by simply putting in your email address. There’s no need to be hesitant because they promise not to send you a million emails over the course of the year. What you will get are two emails a year to simply remind you to lubricate your garage doors.
Does lubrication sound difficult? Trust me, not all of us are DIY people and can get intimidated by things we aren’t 100% familiar with. However, when it comes to lubricating our garage door(s), it can take as little as five minutes or less. A 2014 survey shows that only 27% of homeowners surveyed said that their garage door’s hinges and rollers had ever been lubricated and only 12% within the year. Just looking at those numbers is proof enough that we tend to forget or neglect garage doors.
As I mentioned above, this is a completely free service to homeowners. No charges, no annoying spam emails..nothing. Just a simple reminder, twice a year to let us know to lubricate our garage doors. If a homeowner does need more extensive garage door repair services or isn’t comfortable performing basic maintenance tasks, you can find nearby garage door professionals by entering your zip code on the website. This is a great service that I have personally checked out as well.
GarageDoorCare.com also provides information that details other takes that homeowners can perform to ensure that garage doors remind in top operation conditions such as:
- Visual inspection of the door’s springs, cables, rollers, pulleys and mounting hardware
- Reverse mechanism test
- Photo eye test
It also touches on 10 things every homeowner should know about garage door safety and a special page devoted to children and garage door safety, which is so very important!
So if you have a minute, I encourage you to go checkout GarageDoorCare.com and sign up for the twice a year reminder. It’s quick, simple and will help keep your garage door in tip top shape!

I didn’t realize that garage doors should be annually maintained.
Do a Monthly visual inspection.
My favorite tip was Never stand or walk under a moving garage door.
I hate to say this but my favorite is the children–teaching them it is not a toy. When my son was younger he used to try to grab a hold of the door from the outside and try to ride it. Of course, he got in trouble.
“Semi-annual lubrication. Apply a small amount of spray lubricant to the door’s hinges, rollers and tracks.” was my favorite tip.
My favorite tip is to never walk under a moving garage door.
My favorite tip was adults should not allow children access to the remote controls or push button wall controls for garage door opener systems.

my favorite is do a monthly visual inspection.
Garage doors should be maintained annually and visually inspected monthly
Never attempt to repair a garage door’s springs or cables. These are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury or even death. These are best repaired by a trained service technician.
My best tip is to keep everything in great working condition, upkeep and have it inspected often.
My favorite tip is the fact that it warns you to be as careful and not take the system for grant-it.
