We have done a few fun Halloween crafts, but this week we decided to do a picture of the beauty that surrounds us. Fall has arrived and the trees here in North Carolina are absolutely beautiful. Our entire yard is covered with a blanket of leaves and the trees are filled with such amazing and vibrant colors.
This was a very easy craft for the kids. On Wednesday, we took an 8×10 canvas and painted it one color. My oldest chose blue as his background since the skies this time of year are always such a soothing blue. My four-year old chose to do an orange/peach color to represent a sunset. We let that dry for the day and came back to our product on Thursday.
Very lightly I outlined where the tree trunk was going to be so that my four-year old would have an idea of where he should paint. It was funny because when he painted a very tiny square at the top of his trunk, he looks up very proud and says “I’m done!”. Then he realized he needed to paint the entire trunk brown.
When he finished his tree trunk, both boys picked out the colors they wanted for their leaves. That’s when the real fun began.
Basically, they started just putting random finger prints in different parts of the tree and on the ground. Once they go their prints randomly spaced, then they went wild. They started tapping colors like crazy on their canvas. There was no pattern or thought. They were just dipping fingers in all their random colors (even brown).
The end result was a beautiful fall picture. We are going to make a frame from scrap wood that we have and let them hang them on the walls.
Here is a video showing how we did the entire project:
