As a family, I set aside so long every day to read to my boys.  Obviously we do some picture books, but we also read chapter books as well.  We usually cover about a chapter a day which I think is a great start.

Recently we had the opportunity to read Kate Walden Directs: Night of the Zombie Chickens and it has to be one of the funniest books we have read in a long time.  With us raising our own chickens, my boys could really relate when she would talk about how they refused to cooperate with her movie, and that at times she felt they were out to get her.  I think my boys feel that way at times since chickens do as chicken please and there is no way to reason with them.

About The Book:
Night of the Zombie Chickens is suppose to be Kate Walden’s breakout film.  But her supporting actresses-her mother’s prize organic hens-are high maintenance, to say the least.  Thank goodness Kate’s best friend Alyssa is the star.  She’s great at screaming and even better at killing zombies in creative ways.

But when Alyssa turns into a real-life soulless zombie and ditches Kate for the most popular girl in seventh grade, Kate suddenly finds herself both friendless and starless. Now, thanks to Alyssa’s new crowd, Kate is the butt of every joke at school and consigned to the loser table at lunch.

If movies have taught Kate anything, it’s that the good guy can always win—with the right script. And her fellow social outcasts may be the key to her own happy ending. Kate hatches the perfect revenge plot against her former best friend, but even though her screenplay is foolproof, Kate soon realizes that nothing—in filmmaking or in life—ever goes exactly as planned. Especially when there are diabolical hens out to get you.

Julie Mata co-owns a film/video production business where she works as the producer and writer.  She’s created really fun and interesting videos on Instagram giving kids tips on how they can create their own films using things they have at home.  This is such an awesome addition to the book.  Not only would this book make awesome summer reading material for kids 8-12, but they can also learn to create their own short film for added summer fun!!

All in all my boys really enjoyed reading this book and so did I.  It was funny but it also delivers a great message at the end for kids in that real life isn’t at all like the movies and television shows project a lot times.

Kate Walden Directs: Night of the Zombie Chickens is available on Amazon for $12.90 (Hardcover) and $9.99 for Kindle.
