I Am Martin Luther King Jr. is our fourth book from Ordinary People Change the World! We have fallen in love with this series of books. I continue to be amazed at how much information my five-year old is learning with each book.
About the book:
Even as a child, Martin Luther King, Jr., was shocked by the terrible and unfair way African American people were treated. When he grew up, he decided to do something about it – peacefully, with powerful words.
He helped gather people together for nonviolent protests and marches, and he always spoke up about loving our human beings and doing what’s right. He spoke about the dream of a kinder future, and bravely led the way toward racial equality in America.
Our Activities:
We had tons of fun with different activities surrounding Martin Luther King Jr. Our first activity was a painting the boys wanted to do. Since I can’t draw, I printed a dove, cut it out and taped it on our canvas. I apologize for lack of pictures for this activity. I completely forgot to take a snapshot of our different steps. You can download the template for that HERE..
Supplies we used:
5×7 flat canvas
8×10 flat canvas
acrylic paint

Egg Cracking Activity
We took one white egg and one brown egg. We talked about how they were the same, and how they were different. My five-year old led the discussion. He was telling everyone how the brown egg would have to stand outside and eat an ice cream and the white egg could go indoor, and then on about the schools.
Then the time came to crack the egg open. This was to show them that although they were different on the outside, they were both the same on the inside. I figured this would be a pretty fast lesson, but end up going on for over 30 minutes due to our discussions.Along with the above activities, I created printables for us to use. We had word search, time lines, etc. My eight-year old wrote his out, but a lot of it I did orally with the five-year old.
