Grains…to eat them or not. It’s one of those things that is entirely up to each individual, but did you know that Health authorities recommend that adults eat 48 grams or more of whole grains daily and that children should eat a minimum of 40-48 grams? I will be the first to admit that I have to pick and choose which whole grains work for me. I’ll also admit to the fact that my kiddos get pretty close to their recommended daily suggestions and most days I’m lacking big time!
To help get us more aware of just how much whole grains we consume, Nature’s Harvest® (one of our favorites) is excited to launch the “Whole Grain Challenge“. This challenge is designed to encourage moms and families to incorporate 48 grams of whole grains into their diets every day. The challenge goes through August 10, and all you have to do is visit Nature’s Harvest® Facebook page, take the pledge and be automatically entered into a weekly sweepstakes. It’s really that simple!!
Our family did head over and take the challenge. Having a well-rounded diet for my family is important to me which is one reason I refuse to feed my eight year old sandwiches for all of his meals. Seriously, the kid requests them at every meal regardless of what we are eating. I have to give him credit for trying, but for the most part he rarely gets his way.
Lunch most days they do request a sandwich with apple slices and as I mentioned above, Nature’s Harvest® bread is one of our favorites. Their sandwiches are pretty simple. They usually consist of ham and/or turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. We do have grilled cheese requests on some days and when that happens, I can’t help but fix myself an “adult” grilled cheese.
It’s actually pretty simple and quick to make and it tastes oh so delicious! All you do is take the bread, sliced tomatoes, avocados and gruyere cheese. I love that lately I can use garden fresh tomatoes..store bought just can’t compare to the taste of homegrown.

- 2 slices Nature's Harvest® Whole Grain Bread
- 1 tomato
- 4 oz gruyere cheese
- 1 avocado
- salt and pepper
- butter
- First off have your tomato and avocado cut into thin slices.
- Heat up a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Rub butter directly on the skillet and add both slices of bread to the pan.
- Toast for a couple of minutes until golden brown, then remove the bread slices. The sides we just browned go on the inside of your sandwich.
- To build you first put down sliced gruyere cheese, followed by tomato and then avocado.
- Add a little salt and a little pepper if you prefer and then add another layer of cheese.
- Add a tad more butter to your pan and brown on both sides until cheese has melted.
