When it comes to practicing our math facts, I’m always on the lookout for fun and unique products. Recently our family had the chance to review Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting. This is a new game created by Sunya Publishing that turns learning math facts into a fun game that the entire family can enjoy!
Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting
Sunya is a game that helps children learn their math facts. It’s geared towards ages 7 and up and is available in two different formats.
• Adding and Subtracting (recommended ages 7 & up)
• Multiplying and Dividing (recommended ages 9 & up)
For our review, we were sent the Adding and Subtracting game which was a perfect fit for us. I felt it would be wonderful practice for both my third-grader and kindergartner.
Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting comes with the following:
• Sixty custom Sunya adding and subtraction playing cards
• Sunya adding and subtracting number line
• Thirty math and science fact and riddle cards
We also received a game book to go along with the game. The game book that we receive had a mixture of pages. Some were in gray scale while others were in full color. The company sent us the game book in this format for additional feedback. While I personally prefer the color format, the gray scale works just as good. The game book also includes very detailed instructions for playing three variations of the game, as well as additional math activities for young children.
How is Sunya played:
As I mentioned, Sunya can be played in three different variations. Our family chose to only play the simplest variation for addition. I felt that this would be easiest for both boys since we have minimal subtraction with my five-year old.
You begin the game using all sixty cards. If your child needs the number line, it can be used during the game.
Once you decide on whether you are going to play addition or subtraction, the dealer creates a math sentence. Once the math sentence has been created, the dealer then deals each player four cards.
As each person takes their turn, they create a new number sentence on top of the one previously laid down. They can use all the cards in their hands to do this, or may only have one to use. If you are unable to make a number sentence, then you draw from the deck until you can. The first player to use all their cards yells “Sunya” and wins the game.
This was the simplified version that we played, but do keep in mind that there are two more advanced variations for players that want a little more of a challenge.
All in all, both of my boys really enjoyed this game. While my youngest only played it a couple of times, my nine-year old and I played it numerous times. It’s such an awesome way to practice math facts. Also, the entire family had a blast with the math and science fact and riddle cards.
