Learn Multiplication With Times Tales

The Trigger Memory Co REVIEW
My third-grader has had a very hard time learning his multiplication. We have basically been at a stand still since I didn’t want to move forward until he felt confident in this area. I’m not sure why multiplication was so scary for him, but he would cry anytime we opened his math book. He went from a kid that loved math, to one that dreaded every second of it. Recently, all this turned around when we started using Times Tales from Trigger Memory Co.

What is Times Tales
Times Tales is a video-based program that helps children to memorize upper level multiplication by putting it into fun stories. These stories are set up in a way to help children remember their math facts. The following multiplication facts are covered in Times Tales:

• 3×6, 3×7, 3×8, 3×9
• 4×6, 4×7, 4×8, 4×9
• 6×6, 6×7, 6×8, 6×9,
• 7×7, 7×8, 7×9
• 8×8, 8×9
• 9×9

For the review, I received the digital version of Times Tales, but it’s also available as a DVD. The digital version has a total of five files to download. The files are:

2 MP4 Files (Times Tales Part 1 & Part 2)
Part 1 & Part 2 Printables
Answer Key

It will take awhile for the digital version to download, so be prepared. I started the download process while we were doing our school for the day, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I can’t remember the exact length of time it took to download all the files, but if I had to guess, I would say around 30 minutes.

Once everything was downloaded it was time to stat the video. At the first of the video they go over the instructions, which I thought this was a nice touch. I would much rather watch it as part of the video than to have an extra file to print. The videos are 30 minute in length, and puts the multiplication facts in story form. It had my third-graders complete attention.12966142_10209544971680319_1040898467_n

Times Tales does recommend allowing at least one week after completing part one before beginning part two. During that time, we played games using the dice, did the worksheets and flash cards. If at any time your child isn’t sure about a story, or they aren’t getting all the details correct, they can re-watch the video. We ended up watching it twice total. We did a refresher of Part 1 before we began Part 2.

Our Overall thoughts:

I wasn’t sure what to think about Times Tales at first.  We had tried so different products to help my third-grader understand multiplication. Basically before starting this program, we were both reaching frustration.  So I can honestly say that I was blown away by how this program just made something click. He watched the video one time and immediately was able to work his multiplication.  timestales4

He would look at say 4×6 and rattle off the complete story and then give me the answer each time.  I couldn’t believe it. I never dreamed that putting multiplication into story form would help him click and the way Times Tales does the program, it WORKS!  The video doesn’t have fancy graphics or anything like that, but it kept him completely engaged.  Not one time did the video lose his attention.

He particularly loved  “Beat the Clock!”  Talk about excitement when he was getting them all correct.  He came running with a HUGE smile on his face to let me know that he got them all correct, which made this mom very happy. He was finally getting multiplication.12966434_10209544971760321_322721700_n

The only thing that I wish this program offered was a cheat sheet for the parents.  There were times when he would second guess his stories and for the life of me I can’t remember, so for that reason it would be nice to have the stories printed out so that the parent/teacher could refer back to them if the child should have a question.
