I’m so excited to share Cindy Jenson-Elliot’s new book Weeds Find a Way.  This simple story about weeds is beautiful to read and to see (Carolyn Fisher did an amazing job with the illustrations!)  I found myself reading it several times just to be sure I didn’t miss a thing!

About the book:

WEEDS FIND A WAY (Beach Lane/S&S; Feb 2014; ages 4-8) is poet and nature educator Cindy Jenson-Elliott’s debut. Gorgeous full-color illustrations by Carolyn Fisher depict the tenacity and versatility of these often-despised plants. But as the author says, “Good or bad, weeds offer endless opportunities to study one of nature’s most wonderful tools: adaptation.”

About the Author:

My Thoughts:

What a beautiful book!  I’ve found myself drawn to children’s books that feel more like poetry than a story for quite some time.  Weeds Find a Way is just that a poetical treat!  The mixed-media illustrations are fabulous and really make the story pop.  I love that you can identify with some of the weeds mentioned such as Dandelion.  On that page a little girl is blowing her ‘wishes’ to the wind.  Something we’ve all done.

The crowning jewel of this book is the index in the back which lists all the weeds throughout the book and a little blurb about them.  I have to admit after seeing some of the more beautiful weeds I wanted to know what they were and the index is perfect!  Another thought I had was this book would make a PERFECT unit study!  (Hello Homeschoolers!)  You could do so much – nature walks, memorize the story, and even research about one of the weeds used for medicinal purposes.)  Be sure to visit CindyJensonElliott.com to find a curriculum guide that is AWESOME!
