What We’re Reading In July

julyreadIt’s hard to believe that we are already into the second weekend of July.  Today we just finished up the last two books from June (Mrs. Piggle Wiggle & Puppy Pirates), so it’s time for our July book list.

Read Aloud: Everyone

Charlotte’s Web:
917FQerThOL
Some Pig. Humble. Radiant. These are the words in Charlotte’s Web, high up in Zuckerman’s barn. Charlotte’s spiderweb tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur’s life when he was born the runt of his litter.

Davis (3rd Grade)

The Kid in the RED Jacket
The Kid in the Red JacketHoward Jeeter is living his worst nightmare.  His parents have moved him across the country without even asking, and they don’t care one bit that they’ve ruined his life.  The kids in Howard’s new town act as if he’s totally invisible-except for his six-year-old neighbor, Molly Vera Thompson. True, Howard could use a friend, but an annoying little girl who talks nonstop and looks like a miniature Bozo isn’t exactly what he had in mind.  Of course, when you’re really lonely, you’ll be friends with anyone – almost.

LUKE (Kindergarten):

Farmer Boy
Farmer Boy

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits, or best of all, when the fair comes to town.

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved story of how her husband Almanzo grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

Along with this chapter book, we read 1-2 picture books a day. We are looking forward to adding the following into our rotation:

There Was An Old Dragon Who Swallowed A Knight
51ad4x-EOEL
We all know that “there was an old lady” who swallowed lots of things. Now meet the old dragon who swallows pretty much an entire kingdom! Will he ever learn a little moderation?! This rollicking rhyme is full to bursting with sight gags, silly characters, and plenty of burps!

He visits the birds in the trees, a mole underground, a camel in the hot desert sand, puffins in the cold arctic snow . . . only to realize his own home is the perfect place for him after all. Welcome Home, Bear offers rich illustrations, bright colors, and a simple, spare text—all wrapped up in a beautiful, kid-friendly package. Readers meet animals in their habitats around the world—and return with Bear to the one place he is truly happy.

Women Living Well: Find Your Joy in God, Your Man, Your Kids, and Your Home
41Szo5mo7HL
Women desire to live well. However, living well in this modern world is a challenge. The pace of life, along with the new front porch of social media, has changed the landscape of our lives. Women have been told for far too long that being on the go and accumulating more things will make their lives full. As a result, we grasp for the wrong things in life and come up empty.

Helicopter pilot Lt. Sara Denning joins a navy battle group with little fanfare–and that’s just the way she likes it. After her brother Ian’s tragic death, her career path seemed obvious: step into his shoes and enter the Naval Academy, despite her fear of water. Sara’s philosophy is simple–blend in, be competent, and above all, never do anything to stand out as a woman in a man’s world.

Somewhere along the way, Sara lost herself–her feminine, easygoing soul is now buried under so many defensive layers, she can’t reach it anymore.
